Semiotics of Programming
نویسنده
چکیده
This book provides a semiotic analysis of computer programs along three axes: models of signs, kinds of signs, and systems of signs. Since computer programs are well defined and rigid, applying semiotic theories to them will help to reorganize the semiotic theories themselves. Moreover, semiotic discussion of programming theory can provide possible explanations for why programming has developed as it has and how computation is fundamentally related to human semiosis. The goal of this book is to consider the question of what computers can and cannot do by analyzing how computer sign systems compare to those of humans. A key concept throughout is reflexivity, that is, the capability of a system or function to reinterpret what it has produced by itself. Sign systems are reflexive by nature, and humans know how to make the most of this characteristic but have not yet fully implemented it into computer systems. Therefore the limitations of current computers can be ascribed to insufficient reflexivity.

Algebraic Semiotics, Proofwebs, and Distributed Cooperative Proving 1
We describe a new approach to interface design called algebraic semiotics, combining semiotics with algebraic speciication to give a rigorous theory of representation quality, and we apply it to the tatami distributed cooperative proving project. This project uses standard html, Java, etc. for remote proof browsing, servers for remote proof execution, a protocol to maintain truth of distributed...
متن کاملComputer Semiotics
This paper presents semiotics as a framework for unders tanding and designing computer systems as sign systems. Although semiotic methods can be applied to all levels of computer systems, they view computer systems under a particular perspective, namely as targets of interpretations. When we need to see c o m p u t e r systems as automata, semiotics has little to offer. The main focus of the pa...

This paper studies the role of the semiotic discussions of Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher and mathematician, in the formation of Deleuze’s first leading book on cinema, Cinema 1: the Movement-Image,in whichthe author surpasses Peirce’s semiotics. We will show how Deleuze creates a new form of signs in his second leading book on cinema, Cinema 2: the Time-Image. Deleuze had tri...

G. D. Putnik, Editorial identifies semiotics as a candidate framework for a new MSI paradigm to extend the solution space of the MSI discipline with focus on use, interpretation and communication of and about technical solutions for MSI. Semiotics comprises syntax, semantic and pragmatics. Contrary to the first two the latter is totally unknown in the MSI discipline, but all three are used in i...
متن کاملComputational Semiotics : An Approach for the Study of Intelligent Systems Part I : Foundations
The aim of this paper is to introduce the theoretical foundations of an approach for intelligent systems development. Derived from semiotics, a classic discipline in human sciences, the theory developed provides a mathematical framework for the concept of knowledge and for knowledge processing. As a result, a new perspective to study and to develop intelligent systems emerges. Here, Part I, the...
متن کاملSemiotics for Ontologies and Knowledge Representation
The Semantic Web implies the comprehensive use of the main semiotic postulates on the Web. One of the most important facts about human understanding comes from the area of linguistics and semiotics. The semiotic techniques, such as syntagm and paradigm are explained through the examples in learning environment, in the context of logical understanding and knowledge representation on the Web.
